Gwen Brenssell

With the upcoming season set to start Rodeo NZ has lost one of it’s greatest and long serving supporters.

Gwen Brenssell (Gwenny) of Outram, 87 years young, passed away last month after a short battle with an aggressive cancer.

For 53 years, season after season, Gwenny has settled on the bank to watch them all. From the practice days and jackpots to every rodeo from the bottom of the South Island to the top, travelling to the North Island many times, to Calgary and Mt Isa. The good and bad, the fast and slow, the hot and cold, loving almost every minute, though she has been heard to say "she” deserved the "Life Membership” not Rolly!

Every time, every score, recorded in her program. Her passion for the sport shown in her appreciation of good competition, good horsemanship and lifetime friendships made. It was a brave person who dared to speak during the Barrel Race or Roping, her favorite events, in case she missed a crucial time! She will not see this coming season as she had planned, but she would expect it to be the best one ever.

When she passed away, tears were many, there will never be another Gwenny.

Roland (Roly) & Family wish to thank sincerely all who showed such kindness and support over the past month
